Safari 3 Beta on Windows XP

June 13th, 2007

I installed Safari 3 beta on my Windows machine today, just to try it out. Apple claims that Safari is really fast, and in my experience, I found this to be true.

Despite what Joel Spolksy thinks, I find that I like the font rendering in Safari. I’m sure that everybody either loves it or hates it.

Even if Safari does not replace any existing Windows browser in the future, getting Safari to run on Windows is still a good thing for Apple. Just having a copy of Safari installed on all those web developers’ machines means that they might consider trying out their applications in Safari, and make them work. Of course they may choose not to do so. But now they can, if they want to. More web applications would now be supported on Safari. There may be a only a teeny-weeny percentage of people in the world using Safari. But despite this, Safari may get acceptance as one of the mainstream browsers.

The one thing I really liked about Safari is its address bar autocomplete feature. You’re probably thinking that all browsers have this feature, and whats so great about it. What pleasantly surprised me was the accuracy. Safari always seemed to get it right. IE 7 is horrible when it comes to this. There seem to be a bazillion choices to choose from. Firefox is much better. But with Safari, it seemed like magic. Safari knew exactly the page I wanted to open. I don’t know how they do it.

I also really liked the in-page search — the way the search key words stick out the page.

There are still a lot of kinks to iron out. I even got the browser to crash once. :-)

You should probably give it a shot yourself, and let me know if you agree.

Here’s a good review that Najeed pointed out.
