Anti-Iraq war protest at Chicago

March 19th, 2008

I participated in the Anti war protest at Chicago today evening, to mark the 5th anniversary of the Iraq “shock and awe” war.

Please find some pictures from my cellphone camera here. I’m afraid the quality of these photographs is not terribly good, but that’s what I get for leaving my camera home.

    What is the point of this protest now? It is meaningless and just meant for media hype. This should have been done when this incident was about to happen. It is like protesting against Kurukshetra War by the widows of soldiers after Yudhisthira was crowned the prince of Hastinapur (this does not mean I am equating the 2 wars – Kuruskshetra was for the good, Iraq for greed of one person – Bush). Will Bush ever hear this? Will the future government hear this? Never.

    Even if asked, I will not participate now as it creates no impact. When everyone says – “They hate Bush..Drive out Bush”. Why did they ever vote him back?…This doublespeak by voters put a serious question on American democracy.

    This is the funniest protest I have ever seen.

    Protests were held on the very first day of bombing of Iraq. Protests have been held on the same day every year for five years. Nobody heard the protesters, but should they stop protesting because of that? If they did, would that not indicate that *everyone* in America supports the war, when that is clearly not the case?

    I can understand that you are bitter about the way things have turned out with the war. Most of us are. But I am still glad that there are people out on the streets making their feeble voices heard, instead of sitting at home in front of a television and watching the latest rumour about Britney Spears.

    Giving in to media publicity, a lot of people did vote Bush back in to power. But do you believe that nobody voted against him? I’m pretty sure each one in that protest march did.

    May be they did get a little media publicity – publicity that they deserve. But they also risked the police batons. Can anybody see that?

    @Anjan K.S.
    Anjan, there was the largest mass coordinated protest all across the world in 2003, right before US was about to invade Iraq. It was so great that it made the guiness world record.
